Minyard Group Voluntarily Pulls Fresh Bagged Spinach

Proactive Move Aimed at Ensuring Shopper Safety

Coppell, Texas (Sept. 15, 2006) — The Minyard Group today announced that it is voluntarily removing from its shelves all prepackaged fresh spinach and packaged salads containing fresh spinach. The move comes in the wake of the FDA’s issuance of a warning to consumers to avoid all bagged raw spinach, which the agency suspects may be tied to an ongoing outbreak of e coli infections that have killed one and sickened at least 50 people in ten states.

The voluntary removal affects all Minyard Group stores, including Carnival, Minyard and Sack ‘n’ Save outlets in Texas, although Texas has not been affected by the outbreak yet. Minyard Group stores will also accept returns of unopened raw spinach products upon presentation of the product and a valid receipt.

"We put customer safety as paramount,” said CEO Michael Byars. “Given the severity of this illness and the seriousness of the nationwide outbreak, we are voluntarily removing these products to keep our shoppers safe.”
